Rhizosphere is a free improv collective based in Minnesota’s Twin Cities. Their music is characterized by wide-ranging group improvisations drawn from a number of roots music traditions such as world music, jazz, regional traditional music, and the blues. A show might begin with a lyrical motif, a nuanced rhythmic groove, or even a prompt from the audience; the musical arc may include references to the Great American Songbook or folk songs from Eastern Europe, West Africa, or the British Isles.

Rhizosphere performs in a variety of configurations showcasing different artists from the Twin Cities music scene, exploring new sonic possibilities while staying true to their eclectic, spontaneous roots. The current line-up features Sean Egan on clarinet, Aaron Kerr on cello, Gabriela Sweet on slide guitar and vocals, and Adam Zeimet on drums, cymbals, and percussion.

Listen for Rhizosphere at clubs, coffeehouses, art openings, curated concerts (such as St. Paul Como Conservatory’s “Music Under Glass” series), private events, and community organizations.
